Jangir Maddadi: A Designer's Journey

Jangir Maddadi is a Kurdish-born, Swedish designer known for creating functional sculptures that balance form, function, and material. With a background in design that began with a passion for drawing, he has been designing and manufacturing products for both public and private spaces since graduating from design school n 2014.

Timeless Design

Jangir's collection is based on the products he has created for various interior projects, and refined through repeated use in people's homes. He approaches design with a methodology grounded in understanding the materials and processes involved, resulting in timeless designs that incorporate both strength and character.

Sustainability at the Core

Sustainability is an essential aspect of Jangir's approach to design. He believes that design should not only be beautiful and functional, but also responsible and mindful of its impact on the environment. This is reflected in his commitment to producing everything locally in the south of Sweden, reducing the carbon footprint of transportation, and using materials and manufacturing processes that are environmentally friendly. Additionally, Jangir designs each object with the aim of it lasting for generations, both in terms of quality and timeless design that will be as iconic in the future as it is today.

A passion for drawing

Jangir's background in design is rooted in his early passion for drawing, which began as a way to escape the reality of life in an Iraqi refugee camp where he spent 13 years of his life. Today, drawing remains an integral part of his identity as a designer. His move to Sweden in 1993 exposed him to the beauty of pine furniture and the work of iconic Finnish designer Alvar Aalto, whose designs left a lasting impression and sparked his interest in understanding the stories behind objects and the role that design plays in our everyday lives.

The essence of Scandinavian design

In 2004, his thesis at the School of Design focused on creating a collectable giveaway collection that symbolised Scandinavian design. Through research and a survey sent to respected individuals in the design, architecture, and other creative fields, he gained a deep understanding of what defines Scandinavian design and how it is perceived internationally. This experience shaped his design language and approach, and has been a guiding principle throughout his career.

A designer's approach

Jangir's design aesthetic is heavily influenced by his understanding of Scandinavian design principles. He believes that design should be both functional and beautiful and has developed a wide range of products during various interior projects. From the initial concept to the coordination of the entire production process, including product photography and art direction, each object has its own story, identity, and personality.
